On the big Island there are more black sand beaches than white sand due to it being the youngest of all the Hawaiian Islands. On many of these beaches, Hawaii's native Sea Turtles, the Honu, come to sunbathe and nap in the warm tropical sun. At certain times of year, the turtles dig deep nests in the sand and lay their cache of eggs.
One very popular location to see turtles is Punalu'u, near South Point.
